W2CB #27: She Began to Fly

Hi, everyone! It's a Words 2 Craft By Monday. And, from the look of things, this video thingy seems to be working again.

So, here's a quick intro to my card inspired by our March words.

Just when the caterpillar thought her life was over… she began to fly.

Canson watercolor; Recollections black
Distress Ink peacock feathers, picked raspberry, mustard seed, black soot; StazOn jet black
Ranger blending tool used to apply Distress Inks
Paper Smooches group hugs sentiment and graceful beauties images
hand-drawn dashed line with Memento black pen
Queen & Co gems, colored with black Sharpie
toothbrush to apply spattered black soot

Truth in advertising, my card is a CASE of a card made by Kimberly Wiener for Paper Smooches. To see the original post, please click here.
  • I loved the colors Kimberly used and how she coordinated the butterflies and the swatches -- is that the right term? -- of color. However, when I tried this, it was not even close to Kimberly's pretty card.
  • Inspired by Kimberly's striking black-inked sentiment,  I decided to try black-inked butterflies against my favorite Distress Inks (peacock feathers and picked raspberry).
  • After inking the sentiment layer, the inking felt a little flat -- dare I say boring. So, I blended in some mustard seed with the picked raspberry and loved the effect. The background felt richer, more dimensional.
  • A little spattering of black soot helped to marry the black elements with the blue and pinkish orange ones.
  • The picked-raspberry-mustard-seed layer was placed on black cardstock to truly pop this pretty background.
  • Being partially-die-cutting challenged, I fussy cut my butterflies to create a bottom border and adhered this layer using dimensionals.
  • Lastly, I added a few gems around the sentiment. You'd think this would take five seconds. But, oh no, try thirty minutes. I'm still not in love with these gems. However, they were my best option after pulling out every embellishment known to mankind... and I really felt there need to be an element of sparkle around the sentiment to make it a stronger focal point.

So, that's how I interpreted this month's words. Can't wait to see how they inspire you. Think I'll share this CASE of Kimberly's card over at the Paper Smooches Guest Designer Search.

Parting Thoughts

There are a couple of gift certificates up for grabs at W2CB. Annie is our hostess this month and has all the details. Hope to see you there!

The Beautiful Butterflies Challenge started over at Cards in Envy on Monday. It runs for two weeks. And, the challenge is no longer limited to A2 cards, but cards still need to be envelope-flat.  :)

Last, but oh my goodness not least, is the Spring Colors 4 Kids over at Send a Smile 4 Kids. Those of us who ship cards to the SAS4Kids hospitals will be sending boxes of spring and Easter cards in a week or two. The SAS4Kids DT has shared some adorable spring cards as we approach this deadline. This challenge started on Saturday and also runs for two weeks. Think you'll be seeing this my butterfly card over there too.   :)

Have a great Wednesday! Thanks for stopping and happy scrappin'!
