Thankful Thursday

Hi, everyone!

Seems like forever since I wrote a Thankful Thursday post. I either forgot it was post day altogether or didn't remember until late in the evening when I was dog tired. But, tonight I made a point of remembering... for a pretty special reason.

Over the holidays, my dear 94-year-old father-in-law fell. It was a full day before we knew. (Turns out those alert buttons don't do a whole lot of good if your loved one isn't wearing his/hers.) So, we've been working to ensure he's getting the care he needs while facilitating the logistics of several moves: apartment to hospital, hospital to rehab, rehab to assisted living. We are so very thankful that my father-in-law is responding well to his medical care while adjusting to his new living arrangements.

So, tonight I'm thankful for:

  • wonderful emergency responders,
  • supportive caregivers... including amazing nurses,
  • one really kind, dedicated cardiologist,
  • professional movers,
  • family friends who have made it a point to visit my father-in-law in his new residence,
  • hubby's leave-no-stone-unturned determination to get the best care possible,
  • my father-in-law's resilience and positive attitude!

Hope to see you tomorrow with a couple of chickie cards. Until then, thanks for stopping and happy scrappin'!

Thankful

Hi, everyone!

Hope the week has gone well... and quickly. Also hope you're nice and warm. It's pretty chilly here... and getting cold.

Today's Card: A Forest Feast

Today's card was inspired by two challenges: the current Sketch Saturday sketch and a Shopping Our Stash color challenge. Since the current Simon Says Monday Challenge has a Thanks/Thanksgiving theme, I'm also going to share my card there.

So, here are a few critters that will be headed to Nationwide Children's Hospital next week.  :)

Bo Bunny farmer's market dp
SU cherry cobbler, Recollections and Neenah Soler white, stash colored cardstocks
Lawn Fawn forest friends images and sentiment, stamped in Versamark onyx black
images colored with Prismacolor pencils
SU/Sizzix embossing folder; SU cherry cobbler ribbon
adhesives: Scotch ATG; foam backing; Zots glue dots; SU mini dimensionals

I chose the paper and pencil colors based on the SOS colors. I topped the scene off with a big cherry cobbler bow in place of the star element on the sketch. Although the bow kind of hides the right edge of the feast scene, the edge is curved... as shown in the sketch. I promise!

Thankful Thursday

It's been quite a while since I've made a Thankful Thursday post, but it's not been for a lack of blessings. We're back from six weeks at our Hilton Head villa, and our time away was just wonderful.
  • Turns out our little Brody loves walking the beach as much as we do -- in spite of picking up those pesky burrs in his paws.
  • It was wonderful catching up with our island neighbors, and we gals had a fabulous girls' day out one glorious, sunny afternoon.
  • About 1,000 trick or treaters attended the island's downtown Halloween event. Really! And, I was so thankful to just be dropping by for a quick look.
  • The local indie art theater ran some great movies, and the popcorn was as yummy as ever.
  • Our favorite ice cream shop still had ice cream and yogurt options.
  • The island SU demonstrator held a couple of fun events.
  • The evening book club provided a fun conversation with familiar faces.
  • I found some great finds for our LFL at the Friends of the Library Bookstore.
  • And, I was really excited to get to volunteer at a couple library kid Halloween events. Pumpkin Decorating, Anyone?

A new challenge started up yesterday at Words 2 Craft By. Hope you'll have a chance to play along. Penny's hosting this challenge.... and her card is AMAZING!

Have a nice weekend, As always, thanks for stopping and happy scrappin'!

Thankful Thursday

Hi, everyone. First of all, thoughts and prayers to all who were affected by Harvey and all who are lie in the path of Irma, including our friends and part-time neighbors on Hilton Head Island.

Last night, a good friend and I met for an Author Night at Gramercy, a new independent bookstore in Central Ohio. Following a great conversation at an upscale fast food restaurant, we were treated to a wonderful book reading/conversation with Julia Keller, author of the Bell Elkins series. Before her novel-writing days... and before her Chicago Tribune days, Julia wrote for the Columbus Dispatch. I loved her Dispatch columns and had forgotten just how darn smart she is.

It was a perfectly lovely evening with a dear friend, discovering a new bookstore while listening to a talented writer.

An evening to remember. An evening for which I am most grateful.

Thankful Thursday: Welcome, Brody!!!

Tonight, I'm thankful that hubby nudged me to go to a couple of shelter rescue events this weekend. And, this little sweetheart wiggled his way into our hearts... and right through our front door.  :)

Brody seems to be feeling right at home. Think these pics speak for themselves.  :)

Wow, has it been a whirlwind couple of days. Maybe I'll have a card to share in a day or two. Until next time, I'm just hoping to make it up 'til the end of Project Runway.  LOL

Thankful Thursday

This week in our neck of the woods...

  • moms took first-day-of-school photos at neighborhood bus stops,
  • members of a local church treated McDonald's lunch patrons to free meals, and
  • our mail carrier delivered new crafting goodies from MFT.
All wonderful things. All things that would have been at the top of most all Thankful Thursday lists.

Yet, this week, things seem different... feel different... are different.

This week, I'm thankful for...
  • the courage of a grieving mother who embodies grace, preaches forgiveness, and vows to continue the fight in the face of unimaginable pain,
  • candlelight piercing the night sky at the University of Virginia, and
  • "ordinary" citizens, elected officials, and corporate leaders who demand more of their country's president.

May God bless America, sweet land of liberty.

Thankful Thursday

Hi, everyone!

Last night's movie binge was a personal celebration of an amazing month of film study. It doesn't get much better than back-to-back-to-back viewings of three Hitchcock classics -- Vertigo, North by Northwest, and Psycho. WOW!!!!

So, tonight I am sooooo thankful for Turner Classic Movie's collaboration with Ball State University to offer viewings of 44 Alfred Hitchcock films during the month of July paired with a six-week online study of Hitchcocks signature style.

As Norman Bates tells Marion Crane, "We all go a little mad sometimes." Watching Hitchcock movies until 3:30 in the morning, including watching Psycho at 1, is... well, it's just a tad mad. And, a dream come true for this classic movie fan.  :)

Thankful Thursday

Hi, everyone!

Well, it's been quite a busy week around here. Turns out today is one of those milestone birthdays. And, it's been a week filled with lunches, dinners, birthday cards, e-mails, phone calls, goodies -- including homemade chocolate peanut butter bars, and phone calls.

How lovely...

Heartfelt thanks to all who have made this such a special birthday.  :)

Thankful Thursday

Hi, everyone! Recovered yet from the holiday weekend? Think things are back to "normal" around here. LOL

But, the holiday festivities are what I'm most thankful for today. Highlights included a barbecue lunch with our dads and going to fireworks with my dad. It was really nice to have a little father-daughter time.   :)

Count Your Rainbows

Today's card will be headed to Nationwide Children's... and was inspired by the current CAS-ual Fridays Tic-Tac-Toe Challenge.

It was also inspired by a recent Jennifer McGuire block stamping technique video. For this card, I chose the one layer, add a tag, rainbow option.

Strathmore watercolor paper; Stampin' Up! black cardstock
Paper Smooches mirror block stamp; Kids Quote sentiment; Simon Says snowflakes; Lots of Fun sun
sun heat embossed with Versamark and SU white powder; SU baker's twine
sentiment in Versamark black onyx
Distress Inks: salty blue, mustard seed, fired brick
Distress Oxides: broken china, fossilized amber, fired brick
adhesives: Scotch ATG; foam backing; Ranger multi medium matte

  • In her video, Jennifer used a block to smoosh her inks. However, I tried the technique using a Paper Smooches mirror block stamp and am pleased with the results. I then drew black lines around the smooshed rectangle to add a little definition to the space.
  • I created a tag by piercing a hole in dic-cut speech two-layer bubble shape.
  • To stay true to the one layer part of the challenge, I used tiny stamps -- not sequins or enamel spots -- to create the tiny blue, orange, and red circles around the tag.
  • The tag's sentiment is masked from one of the Kid Quote stamps.

Hope this isn't too literal of a rainbow interpretation for the CAS-ual Fridays gals. Think I'll also share this over at the Simon Says Summer Sunshine Challenge at Simon Says Stamp. Summer rains that bring colorful rainbows.... that should work, right?!

That's it for tonight. So, have a nice evening, thanks for stopping, and happy scrappin'!

Thankful Thursday

Hi, everyone! Hope it's been a good week. Thoughts and prayers to all in the path of stormy weather.

Today was another day manning -- womanning? -- the local library's summer reading prize table. Tomorrow, I will be helping out at the summer lunch program's library day. Once a week, our library gives out books to the kids who come for lunch. And, of course, both days will find me checking on our neighborhood's Little Free Library.

So, tonight I'm thankful for all the ways that we promote reading in our community.  :)

Have a great Friday... and a wonderful weekend. I'm hoping to have a card to share tomorrow. It's in progress... stamping is complete. Now comes all the stuff I have no idea about. You know.... the sequins, the ribbons, the whatevers. Who would've thought the stamping would be the easy part. (Thank you, MISTI!!! I never could've done that without you.)

Until next time, thanks for stopping and happy scrappin'!

So Tired... and Very Thankful

Yep, I am so tired that I considered skipping today's Thankful Thursday post. But, then I realized I should share the reason for my tiredness.

You see it wasn't that long ago that I would've been exhausted from: getting up at 4:30, being on the road/highway by 5:15, turning on my work computer by 6, not leaving the office until 6:30 or 7... and then putting in a couple of more hours at home on what seemed like a never-ending project.

Tonight, I'm tired from: going for a walk, doing a little cleaning, talking to my dad, going out to lunch with hubby, working the reading program prize table at our local library, attending the library's brown bag book club meeting, spending a little time crafting in the menopause room, grabbing a quick dinner bite with hubby, returning to the library to help out with an evening activity, catching up on the day's news, and then visiting W2CB DT blogs.

Boy, what a difference retirement makes.  :)

That's it for tonight. Have a nice evening!

Got a Book to Share?

Built by Don Davis
If so, our neighborhood has a wonderful place for it.

Today's a pretty special Thankful Thursday post... because it's all about our neighborhood's new Little Free Library!!!

This has been in the works for months, with our civic association taking the initial lead in this project. One of our very own built this beautiful library, and several residents stepped up as co-stewards.

Last Saturday, we opened our library with a ribbon cutting ceremony! The weather was gorgeous, the turnout was great, and the mood was joyous. As you can see in the second photo below, our first books were put in by our youngest readers.  :)

Photos courtesy of Rosemary Davis   :)

Our LFL is on the official LFL World Map! You can find it pretty easily by entering the 43147 zip. If you're ever near Huntington Hills in Pickerington we'd love for you to stop by and visit.

Oh, one last thing before I sign off. I just can't resist this American-Gothic-like photo of library builder Don and hubby Tom on hole-digging, post-installing day.  :)

Have a great day!

cry. laugh. remember

Hi, everyone! Welcome to a Stamp-Club-inspired Thankful Thursday.

Last night's get-together was filled with emotions. There were remembrances of Make-N-Takes at Simon Says Stamp's recent CREATE event, laughter about an upcoming retirement, and tears over the recent loss of a beloved furry family member.

Fittingly, tonight's card is going to be sent to our friend who is mourning her dog's passing.

Bazzill cobblestone and Stampin' Up! black cardstocks; Distress Ink Victorian velvet core paper
My Favorite Things you make my tail wag paw print image
MFT pierced heart STAX dies; SU square stitched die; Simon Says A2 curved die
CMTH big hugs sentiment, in Versamark black onyx
Cuttlebug and SU/Sizzix embossing folders

The Bazzill cobblestone cardstock was a real fine at Tuesday Morning. Two 25-sheet packs were just #2.99 each! And, the sentiment came from one of those 17 CTMH stamp sets that I got as part of that amazing garage sale find a few weeks ago. Kind of balances out those MFT splurges.  :)

Speaking of MFT, this card was inspired by the current MFT Sketch. So, I'll be sharing this over at MFT.

And, because it is a furry friend sympathy card, I'm going to link it up at the Simon Says Furry Friends Challenge.

Parting Thoughts

Another quick reminder that our Words 2 Craft By Springtime = Party Time Challenge is still open. This challenge's words come to us from Robin Williams... and we'd love for you to join us.

Have a nice Friday. I hope to be back with a patriotic card this weekend. Until then, thanks for stopping and happy scrappin'!

A Small-Town Inspired Thankful Thursday

Hi, everyone! Seems like a while since I've posted. Hope life's been treating you well.

I've had a little astronaut and one big planet on my crafting table the last three days. The good news is that this card's finally done, and the great news is that it's absolutely adorable. However, the bad news is that I can't post it yet since I made it for an upcoming challenge.

I do, however, have a Father's Day card to share... that is a direct result of today's Thankful Thursday events.

Thankful Thursday

Weekend before last, I headed northwest for a weekend visit with a dear, dear friend. That Saturday morning we went garage sale shopping. At one of our stops, we came across tons of wonderful stamps, mini inks, papers.... honestly, anything a card maker could want. Turns out it the owner's mom is a CTMH consultant who is changing obsessions {ahem} hobbies.

So, I picked up a handful of items... and took $33 out of my wallet.... asking for a total in case I needed to put anything back. While I was drooling {ahem} browsing through all these yummy things, my friend had put in a good word for me.... and let the consultant know I made cards for SAS4Kids.... and that she could probably make a deal or two if she really wanted to unload some stuff.

The consultant used to make cards for a hospice ministry and totally understood my mission. As unbelievable as it sounds, my $33 bought: 30 mini pigment ink pads, stamping tools, embossing ink and powder, fringe scissors, a 40-card card-making kit, some 12 x 12 double-sided paper... and 17 CTMH stamp sets, including the stamp set used on the card shown at the right.

I can't even begin to thank Deb for her kindness and generosity.

Parting Thoughts

CTMH dp
SU black cardstock
Distress Ink core paper

Cards in Envy currently has a Favorite Color Combo {Anything Goes} Challenge. My color choices tend to vary with the seasons, but blue and brown is a favorite go-to combo for guy cards. So, I'm sharing this SAS4Kids Dad Day card over at SAS4Kids.

Speaking of challenges, our newest Words 2 Craft By Challenge is about a week old. We'd love for you to play along with us. There's a $10 gift certificate to the online merchant of the winner's choice up for grabs.  :)

Have a nice evening. Thanks for stopping and happy scrappin'!

an OUT OF THIS WORLD Thankful Thursday

Hi, everyone!

Now that the Mother's Day SAS4Kids cards have been shipped to Nationwide Children's, I'm turning my attention to cards for dads and special guys.

Today's card was inspired by the latest MFT Sketch. As you can see, I've flipped the sketch.

Distress Ink core papers; Neenah Soler white
Lawn Fawn out of this world images and sentiment, stamped in SU night of navy
image colored with Prismacolor pencils and embellished with Wink of Stella and Glossy Accents
Simon Says Stamp stacked stars die; SU oval stitched die
adhesives: Scotch ATG; Ranger multi medium matte; foam backing
The current Shopping Our Stash Back to Basics Challenge, which is to use a fussy cutting element. I'm hoping this little card counts. I did use dies for the star background and the stitched oval. However, the little astronaut was definitely fussy cut. Can I get an OK from the SOS Team

Thankful Thursday

Today, I'm thankful for series finales that get it right. It seems we hear about lots of finales that don't quite cut it. The Sopranos, Seinfeld, and Lost come to mind. Making a great send off of a fan favorite show must be an incredibly difficult thing to do. But, the folks at Bates Motel really knocked it out of the park. It was a pitch-perfect ending. Seriously well done.

Parting Thoughts

Headed out of town this weekend to visit a good friend. So, I'll most likely be off line the next few days.

So, have a great weekend! Thanks for stopping and happy scrappin'!

Thankful Thursday: Anticipation!!!

Hi, everyone!

Is anyone else out there old enough to remember the Heinz commercial featuring the Carly Simon song "Anticipation"? Well, I'm guilty as charged. LOL

And, as I age, I've come to really appreciate the joy that anticipation can bring.

Several years ago, when I purchased a ticket to the first Simon Says CREATE event, I basked in the anticipation leading up to the big event. Countless work lunches were spent talking about the weekend's itinerary with crafting buddy Mary Anne... including the classes scheduled with crafting rock stars Tim, and Jennifer, and Sandy. When I was telling my dad about the event, he commented that he couldn't remember the last time that he was this excited about something happening.

Turns out there's another Simon Says CREATE event this weekend. Even though I didn't purchase a ticket for the event, Mary Anne and I are headed up to the on-site store... and hoping to make a few make-n-takes, to check out a demo or two. And, yes, I'm feeling just a bit of anticipation.  :)

That's it for tonight. Have a great Friday and a wonderful weekend!

Merry Christmas

Hi, everyone! Hope your day is going well.

Thankful Thursday

Today, I'm thankful for challenges that revive mojo. Ever since being back, I've not done much in the menopause room. Maybe it was getting caught up with all those back-home-to-do tasks. But, last night inspiration hit... thanks to:

So, here's an upcycled wreath with flowers, sketch-inspired card.  :)

Merry Christmas

The card at the right was my jumping off point for the card I'm sharing today. I've kept it for years and years and years. I believe it was the first handmade Christmas card we ever received. More than that, I remember being drawn to the pretty, glittery tone-on-tone tree, as well as its classic ivory-navy-tan palette. In other words, a perfect candidate for a makeover.
  • My first step was dismantelling the layers with minimal damage.
  • The original blue layer was used to create a backdrop for my wreath and the bottom layer to frame the sentiment strip.
  •  The original tan layer was used for the wreath and the middle layer for the sentiment strip.
  • In addition, some of the original tan layer was inked up with fired brick to die cut out the flowers.
  • Flower centers were punched out from that pretty glittery tree. Silver Stickles were applied to add a little extra shine.
  • The original bow was paired up with a sweet gingham ribbon, and a tiny bit of the original ribbon was tucked under the flower cluster.
  • Some scraps of very vanilla that were pretty a pretty good match for the original tree layer were used for the sentiment and the bottom layer of the wreath panel.
  • Finally, the wreath panel and sentiment strip were attached to an embossed mossy meadow card base.

recycled tan, blue, and glittery tree papers; Stampin' Up! mossy meadow and very vanilla
Creative Expressions wreath die Sue Wilson; Paper Smooches botanicals 2 dies
Martha Stewart branch punch; SU owl builder and cookie builder punches (for flower centers)
Cuttlebug Swiss dot embossing folder; Really Reasonable Ribbon ribbon
SU good greeings sentiment, stamped in tip top taupe
adhesives: Scotch ATG; Zig 2-way glue pen; Xyron; foam backing; Ranger multi medium; Zots glue dots

Parting Thoughts

We have a punches and/or dies challenge going on at Send a Smile 4 Kids. Birthdays, thank yous, any theme at all as long as you use at least one punch/die. SAS4Kids is a great way to bring big smiles to little faces in need of a pick-me-up.

And, don't forget about our Words 2 Craft By Challenge. We'd love to have you play along with our N-U-M-B-E-R M-O-U-S-E challenge.

Have a great Friday. Until next time, thanks for stopping and happy scrappin'!

Thankful Thursday

Hi, everyone!

We snow birds flew back home to Ohio after spending the last couple of months in South Carolina. Tonight, I'm thankful for:
  • safe travels,
  • lush, green lawns,
  • sorted mail, unpacked suitcases, and checked-off to-do lists,
  • and our wonderful SAS4Kids card makers. I came home to nine packages of flowers, butterflies, baby animals, and spring colors. Huge thanks to all who make cards for our kids. You're the best!
I probably won't be posting again until Saturday. So, have a great weekend. Until then, thanks for stopping and happy scrappin'!

You're Egg-Stra Special & Thankful Thursday

Hi, everyone Hope it's been a good week....

Thankful Thursday

... and that you've stayed safe and sound during this stormy week.

Tonight, I'm incredibly thankful for the calm after the store. We came pretty close to being hit by some seriously nasty weather last night. We are sooooo thankful that wasn't the case.

You're Egg-Stra Special

Tonight's card was made for an egg-stra special Stampin' Up! demonstrator.

Recollections paddywhack dp; Stampin' Up! green and black card stock; Distress Ink core paper
SU basket bunch images and sentiment, stamped in DI black soot, and dies
Paper Smooches holly jolly tag image
eggs stamped on Distress-Inked Recollections white paper
small hearts: SU owl builder punch; SU whisper white twine
adhesives: Scotch ATG; Zig 2 way glue pen; Zots dots; foam backing

I went with a rainbow color palette to play along with the Simon Says Make a Rainbow Challenge, and I thought this dp paper was a perfect backdrop to pop the basket and showcase these multi-colored eggs.

In addition to the SSS Challenge, I'm going to share this at:

Parting Thoughts

Good news, bad news. The bad news is that we messed up our W2CB linky. The good news is that means you have a few more days to play along. See you at Words 2 Craft By.  :)

That's it for tonight. Have a nice Friday and a great weekend. Until next time, thanks for stopping and happy scrappin'!

Hey, Chickie... It's Thankful Thursday

Hi everyone! Happy Thursday!

Know those times of the year when your calendar runneth over with special events? Well, April is one of those months for me -- particularly the first week of April. I have three special birthdays one after another after another.... literally. Three straight days of birthdays that need to be celebrated.

One of those celebrating an early April birthday is my dear friend Linda. Linda's card was inspired by the Cards in Envy Black and White Challenge and the current My Favorite Things Sketch.

Stampin' Up! black and yellow cardstocks; stash white
Sasayaki Party Chooks digi image, colored with Prismacolor pencils
SU Basket Bunch stamp 5-egg stamp, inked up with Distress Ink black soot
original computer-generated sentiment; SU word bubble and picture frame dies
adhesives: Scotch ATG, foam backing

I took a lot of inspiration from Annie's pops of yellow on her CIE DT card. I'm not usually a huge fan of the black, white, and yellow combo. But, in this case, I decided to make this sweet little chick my pop of yellow.  :)

The background was created using a 5-egg SU stamp. I think this required 30 stamp re-positionings. In the end, I know three things: 1) I never, ever could've done this without a MISTI, 2) I LOVE the result, and 3) Linda is a very dear friend for me to ink up this background.  :)

The chicks are a digi prize that I won in a recent challenge. These cuties are from Sasayaki Glitter, which is a new company to me. Something tells me this won't be the last time I visit this online store.

The sentiment banner and word bubble were created in WORD. I made two text boxes that had black fill and white font.

I'm also going to link this up to two Simon Says Challenges: Layer It Up and Use More than One Die or Punch (dies to cut out the chickie panel and the word bubble).

Thankful Thursday

Market Street Cafe
Tonight, I'm thankful for decadent desserts. Like the worth-every-single-Calorie-and-then-some Bailey's Chocolate Chip Cheesecake. Oh, my... These cheesecakes are supplied to the Market Street Cafe by an island homemade baker. And, yummy does't even begin to describe them.

Parting Thoughts

A quick reminder that our Words 2 Craft By Challenge is still going strong. Annie's hosting this month... and is offering up a $15 gift certificate. See you at W2CB.  :)

Have a nice Friday and a wonderful weekend! Until next time, thanks for stopping and happy scrappin'!

thanks so much

Hi, everyone! Happy Wednesday!

Thankful Thursday Wednesday

Today, I'm thankful for the lovely woman who helped me put together some great mix and match pieces at a local consignment store yesterday.

I received an invitation to my first island luncheon and wanted to wear something a little fancier than jeans or beach gear. I was thrilled to come away with an adorable pair of Chicos pants, a linen blend Chicos jacket, a pretty lace-like white blouse, and a cute black knit top. Lots of mix-and-match possibilities.

And, today's luncheon was just lovely.  :)

Today's Card: thanks so much

I'm hoping to make quite a few thank you cards throughout the year... with the goal of sending them out to some special volunteers in November. Today's card, which was inspired by the current Mojo Monday sketch, is one of a set of six that I've been working on this week.  :)

Pebbles woodland forest dp; Stampin' Up! early espresso cardstock
Paper Smooches botanicals 2 image and graceful beauties sentiment, in SU tip top taupe
SU stitched die; stash twine; circles: SU cupcake punch
Even though this isn't a St. Paddy's card, it does feature a green background. So, I'm going to share it at the Shopping Our Stash Luck O' the Irish and Simon Says Bit O' Green Challenges.

And, since this features Paper Smooches products, I'm also going to share it at its Color of the Month and Guest Designer Search Challenges.

Parting Thoughts

A quick reminder that our March/April Words 2 Craft By Challenge is going on. Annie's hosting this month... and is offering up a nice prze for our challenge winner. Hope to see you over at W2CB!

Have a nice evening! As always, thanks for stopping and happy scrappin'!
