Finally.... A "Thing"

Hi everyone! You may have noticed that one of this blog's pages is "Cards 'N Things". When I started this blog, I had visions of non-card-making-craftiness in my future. Well, it's taken a little while... but I finally have a non-card thing to share!!!

You see I've been looking or a memo board for my crafting corner for about a year or more. It was one of those times when I didn't know exactly what I wanted, but I knew I would know it when I saw it. Know what I mean?

This memo board was going to hang where a black framed piece was hanging, and I really liked the look of the black frame. So, I was looking for a non-office-y, shabby chic, non-run-of-the-mill board (in a black frame) that had just the right personality. (Memo boards can have a personality, right?) There were so many times when I almost bought a board -- which clearly wasn't the board -- before deciding to stick to my guns and put the not-the board back on the shelf.

My perseverance and patience paid off when I found an adorable door-themed board at Homegoods a couple of weeks ago.  :)

Memo Board Pocket Project
Materials Used: Stampin' Up! vellum, cardstock, mask; StazOn jet black, Ranger blending tool

The "thing" I have to share are those striped pockets that are pinned on to my board. After finding the perfect board, I've been on a quest to find the perfect pockets for it. Not having any luck -- and still wanting to avoid an office feel, I decided to try my hand at making my own.
  • I started by measuring and cutting three pieces of vellum. Then StazOn ink was applied to the vellum using a decorative mask (aka stencil) and a "pouncer" too, as my friend Mary Anne calls it.
  • I then scored three edges of each piece of vellum -- scoring two strips each time, and cutting off the two bottom corners of each vellum piece.

  • Pairs of scored lines are folded, as shown on the lower piece of vellum shown above.
  • Adhesive was applied to outer most scored lines. Then the vellum pieces were attached to pieces of cardstock, taking care that the textured sides of each piece of cardstock were facing outward.

  • I'm obviously pleased with the results since I'm sharing these pockets here. However, I think they need a bit of lace across the top edge of the pockets. To add a little more interest, I might add a decorative element to the lower right portion of the largest pocket. And, I'm considering adding some type of text to the cardstock tops. Think I might have some Tim Holtz ephemera that would work well.
Luckily, Simon Says Stamp has an Anything Goes Challenge going on over at the Wednesday Challenge Blog. Going to share these custom-made pockets over there. I'm always so envious of my crafty friends who come up with wonderfully creative home decor solutions. Can't believe I've come up with one of my own!   :)
